Some MPs ready to vote against Brexit

Several lawmakers from the Liberal Democrats, Labour and Social Democratic and Labour Party are prepared to vote against Britain’s exit from the EU unless certain conditions are met, the BBC reported Friday.

The Lib Dems would oppose a motion to trigger Article 50, which would kick off divorce proceedings, unless British Prime Minister Theresa May holds a second referendum on the terms of the eventual exit deal, the party’s leader Tim Farron told BBC Radio 4’s Today program.

“Article 50 would proceed but only if there is a referendum on the terms of the deal and if the British people are not respected then, yes, that is a red line and we would vote against the government,” Farron said.

The British High Court ruled last week that May can’t trigger the article without putting it to a vote in the parliament first.

While Labour has promised to support the government, several MPs, including former leadership contender Owen Smith, said they may break from the party and vote against the motion if amendments aren’t made.

Shadow Foreign Office Minister Catherine West wrote on social media she would vote against it.

“As I have said before, I stand with the people of Hornsey & Wood Green, and I will vote against Brexit in Parliament,” West wrote.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said previously that the SNP will not vote to kick off exit talks if the proposal undermines the will of the Scottish people.
