British newspapers reacted with defiance to news that an attacker had struck near the heart of government Wednesday, killing three people, including a police officer, and leaving dozens of others injured before being shot dead outside the Westminster parliament building.

The Daily Mirror called it an “attack on democracy,” declaring the country was “bowed, not broken” and asking readers to “unite against terror.” The Daily Star proclaimed “We are not afraid,” describing the attacker as a “middle-aged maniac.”

The i newspaper’s front page featured an image of Foreign Office Minister Tobias Ellwood, a former army officer whose brother was killed in the 2002 Bali terror attack, his face smeared with blood, huddling with medical personnel and police over what appears to be the slain policeman. Ellwood was one of the first people to attend to the officer, later identified by authorities as PC Keith Palmer, 48, giving him CPR.

The Sun, also declaring “we are not afraid,” featured a wrap-around front page, with “Maniac who stabbed Britain in the heart” on the front of the paper, “And hero cop who died stopping him” on the back.

The Daily Telegraph led with Prime Minister Theresa May’s statement: “We will never allow evil to drive us apart.”

The Daily Mail chose a graphic close-up of paramedics wheeling the blood-splattered attacker from the scene on a stretcher, with the headline: “Day terror came to Westminster.”
