Centrist Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen emerged victorious in the first round of the French presidential election Sunday, according to final official results from the country’s interior ministry released Monday.
Macron won 24.01 percent of votes and Le Pen 21.30 percent. Conservative candidate François Fillon won 20.01 percent of the vote and the far left’s Jean-Luc Mélenchon 19.58 percent. Socialist Benoît Hamon finished on 6.36 percent.
Macron and Le Pen will meet in the runoff vote, scheduled May 7.
