Spain

Front pages in Spain were dominated by coverage of Thursday’s Catalan election. While the pro-unity Ciudadanos came first in the election, it will be unable to form a government, with separatist parties securing an absolute majority in the regional parliament. El País said the close result reflected the “hard struggle” of the election campaign. ABC ran a picture of Ciudadanos’ leader in Catalonia Inés Arrimadas on its front page, with a headline that highlighted her “historic and bittersweet victory.” La Vanguardia carried comments made by ousted regional President Carles Puigdemont that “Europe has to take note of the failure of [Spanish PM Mariano] Rajoy,” who called the election.

UK

The Daily Mirror and the Times reported on claims a Russian spy infiltrated a meeting in Downing Street this summer between Prime Minister Theresa May and Ukrainian PM Volodymyr Groysman, during which the two discussed security issues. The Times also covered the fallout from the sacking of May’s deputy Damian Green Wednesday night, carrying comments by the head of the Met Police Federation Ken Marsh slamming the retired police officers who leaked details of pornography found on Green’s computer. The i also featured the Green story, reporting Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt wants to be Green’s successor as the PM’s deputy. The Sun devotes its front page to the “return of the great British passport,” after the U.K. government on Friday announced passport covers will be blue once again after Brexit, having switched to burgundy while the country was in the EU.

France

Le Monde carried the story of the European Commission’s Wednesday decision to launch the Article 7 procedure against Poland that could see the country lose its EU voting rights over allegations it is violating the bloc’s fundamental democratic values. Le Figaro reported on the secessionists’ “shock” win in the Catalan election. Libération’s front page featured sailor François Gabart, who broke the record for sailing around the world solo this month. It also reported on failings and “accumulated disappointments” of France’s state-owned railway SNCF.

Germany

Der Tagesspiegel reported that Christian Lindner, the leader of Germany’s Free Democrats, who walked out of coalition talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the Greens, is rethinking the so-called Jamaica coalition. The paper also carried a report on Heiko Maas, Germany’s justice minister, slamming an anti-Semitic online video that has been shared hundreds of thousands of times on social media. Die Welt’s front page focused on Germany’s jobs boom.
