David Attenborough: Forget Brexit, count butterflies instead

Keep calm and count butterflies.

That’s the advice from wildlife broadcaster David Attenborough, who serves as president of the Butterfly Conservation charity and Friday urged Britons to take part in the world’s biggest butterfly count over the next three weeks.

People should “turn their mind away from the squabbles and problems” of Brexit, “sit in a quiet place where the sun is shining, and see how many butterflies come,” Attenborough told listeners of BBC Radio 4’s Today program.

There is scientific research that shows “it is good for people to forget about the woes of Brexit and whatever other woes they may see politically around the world and just concentrate on the natural world,” Attenborough added. “Just the simple pleasures of seeing butterflies in your garden is calming to the soul and spirit and good for us all.”

A prolonged hot spell this year has been a boon for butterfly numbers in the U.K., but Attenborough warned things could take a turn for the worse if it turns into a drought.
